PRINCE GEORGE – Two of the largest rivers in the province run through Prince George. Currently, both are running very high.

Typically, large ice chunks form on the rivers, however, with the recent warm temperatures, precipitation, and high groundwater, levels are creating historical flows.

The Fraser and Nechako rivers have many tributaries, therefore these rivers are continually monitored by environmental scientists as an indicator of climate change and water behavior in our region.

Based on data from the Water Survey of Canada and North America WaterWatch the stream flows are at their highest levels for this time of year.

According to scientist Stephen Dery, the combination of mild weather we had this fall all the way into December, plus the early snowmelt, has led to high stream flows. There is a chance when groundwater levels get high there is a risk of pooling water and landslides.

Environment Canada forecasts temperatures to return to normal by the end of this month.
