QUESNEL — Tragedy on the Barkerville Highway last night.

The Quesnel RCMP say a pedestrian was struck and killed by a privately owned sand truck on the highway near Drummond Road. A 34-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

RCMP say it happened just after 7 p.m. and shutdown the highway for several hours as police investigated.

“At the time of the accident, the roads were wet due to a light rain and there was no artificial lighting,” says Quesnel RCMP Sgt. Richard Wessen. “Witnesses reported that they had to swerve to avoid the female just prior to the collision.”

The driver of the sand truck was not injured and alcohol and speed are not believed to be a factor in the incident,.

The woman’s name will not be released.
