SMITHERS —The driver of a loaded semi-trailer had his vehicle impounded for seven days after he was caught speeding on Highway 16 last weekend.

BC RCMP Traffic Services says police clocked the semi going 150 km/h in a posted 100 km/h zone at approximately 2:10 a.m. Saturday morning on Highway 16, east of Smithers.

“The driver, a man from the Prince George area, was handed a $368 fine and three points on his license and the tractor was impounded for seven days,” says Cpl. Mike Halskov.

“The driver’s employer was notified where it could pickup the trailer, which was loaded with groceries. It is not known if the driver in this case will face any consequences from his employer.”

“This kind of driving behaviour is completely unacceptable on our highways,” states Sgt. Shawn McLaughlin, Unit Commander for BC RCMP Traffic Services in Terrace. “The potential for disaster is high at those speeds, and the driver was putting himself and other motorists at risk of injury or death had a collision ocurred.”

In light of this incident, RCMP Traffic Services reminds motorists to obey speed limits and drive according to the road and weather conditions in your area.
