PRINCE GEORGE – UNBC is on the path to be the first university in Canada to allow free menstrual products, including tampons and pads, in its public washrooms.

The Northern BC Graduate Society is leading the charge to help remove the stigma attached to menstruation and a shortage of resources that sometimes stop women from going to school.

Abby Dooks is a student, a member of the Northern British Columbia Graduate Society. She is leading a campaign to bring to light that some women who attend UNBC need better access to menstrual products.

With the support of the Northern Women’s Centre and Northern Undergraduate Student Society, the groups approached the UNBC Administration with a plan to have the free menstrual product in its washrooms.

According to the Northern Women’s Centre 62 per cent of UNBC’s student population is female. The plan is to start with high traffic washrooms.

Dooks aims to have menstrual products dispensers in place in the next few months
