IIO called in to investigate incident in Vanderhoof

VANDERHOOF — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) are investigating an incident in Vanderhoof that occurred over the weekend that lead to the injury of a man.

The RCMP notified the IIO about the incident which occurred Saturday morning at about 10:30 a.m.

“Frontline officers from the Vanderhoof RCMP were called to a well-being check at a residence in the 1000-block of Kenny Dam Road, Vanderhoof,” says S/Sgt. Janelle Shoihet, senior media relations officer with the BC RCMP.

“When officers arrived they located two women and a man inside. The man, was bound by court ordered conditions not to be in contact with the women, and was subsequently arrested. The man reportedly resisted the officer’s attempts to take him into custody and struggle ensued.”

She says with assistance from the other attending officer, the man was taken into custody and transported to the RCMP detachment where he was assessed by BC Emergency Health Services. BC EHS transported him to a local hospital where it was determined he sustained serious injury.

Shoihet says the IIO BC is investigating to determine whether police actions are linked to the man’s injuries.

No other information has been released.
