New Provincial funding announced for Powder King

Prince George – Some exciting news for northern B.C. as the provincial government made a much-needed funding announcement Tuesday. This rural recovery grant comes at a time when many folks in our area are needing the work.

People living in rural communities throughout the province will soon benefit from B.C. government grants including right here in northern B.C. This initiative will support new jobs and economic opportunities to help them recover from the impacts of COVID-19.

One particular area, that’s close to home is Powder King, which will receive $1-million in funding. The dollars will be used to build a new adventure center. Clint Fraser, who is the Chief Executive Officer for Northern BC Tourism, says this is vital to Powder King and surrounding areas.

“You know the funding is welcome news at a time when our industry is really looking to recover from the significant impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic. You know Powder King has been a long anchor tenant of the winter based visitor economy here, in northern B.C. so it’s really great to see that they have been able to secure this funding.”

The new Pine Pass Adventure Centre will be built at the mountain base to allow expansion of shoulder and summer season activities

“I think it’s also a really great boost to the quality of life for locals because they will have more opportunity to enjoy the enhanced experiences of Powder King, you know throughout the year.”

This is part of B.C.’s $10-billion COVID-19 response, these grants which total $20 million for 38 rural projects have now been approved. In a statement released from Premier John Horgan Tuesday, he said:

“We are working to support economic recovery in every corner of the province, so families and communities can get through the pandemic and start looking towards their futures again. These shovel-ready projects will put people living in rural British Columbia back to work immediately and support building diversified economies in their communities.”

Other northern B.C. rural communities being funded are:

  • McBride: Dunster Community Forest Society, Inventory Storage, $88,000
  • Fraser Headwaters Alliance, Historic Goat River Trail Upgrade, $202,924
  • Quesnel: Gold Rush Cycling Club, Wonderland Trail Network Expansion, $87,520: expansion of trail network.
  • Williams Lake: Williams Lake Cycling Club, Williams Lake Mountain Bike Trail Upgrade Project, $253,085
  • Burns Lake: Burns Lake Native Development Corporation, Burns Lake Native Development Corporation Forestry Operations Expansion Initiative, $779,433

All and all, Fraser says these dollars will go a long way for everybody.

“You know in that area will really help strengthen the tourism sector in northern B.C., you know certainly in the long term.”
