Tourism will be “similar to last year”

PRINCE GEORGE – Despite the introduction of vaccines, Tourism Prince George will be focussing its attention on gathering information from tourists and operators alike about how they would like to see the industry locally go in order to provide more wholesome experiences when the tourists start to return.

“I see it very similar to last year in terms of the summer being a go for BC residents only,” says Tracey McBride, the CEO for Tourism Prince George. She doesn’t expect an uptick in events or conventions until midway through 2022 and who knows about international travel.

And its something Bobbi Carpino with the Salmon Valley Campground is seeing already.

“They are up. About 350% higher than this time last year,” she says, referring to bookings already.

Carpino says last year was a tough one, but programs like Support PG helped a lot.

“In the past, we’ve had international guests. We’ve had guests that have been making their way to Alaska and doing that Northern loop,” she says. “And what we’re finding is that we’re seeing more and more of our locals. People from Prince George and the surrounding area. Which is great. We’re at about 95% of the folks who have booked with us are from Prince George.”

In the meantime, McBride says Tourism Prince George will continue to work on its new branding, which was launched last year. And it will continue the work to create a Northern BC experience while forging new partnerships.
