UNBC moves June convocation virtual

PRINCE GEORGE – It’s a decision that Interim President Dr. Geoff Payne hoped he wouldn’t have to make, moving the June convocation for UNBC virtual for the second year in a row.

Restrictions on social gatherings due to COVID-19 are to thank for the shift to a virtual celebration like what was done for the Class of 2020.

UNBC follows other post-secondary institutions in BC in making the decision including Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, the University of Victoria, and Simon Fraser University in Burnaby.

“It was very hard to make that decision,” says Dr. Payne. “We obviously were looking towards where things were going with COVID-19, but today we made the announcement.’

The university says they are ‘committed’ to a face-to-face ceremony when restrictions allow for the Classes of 2020, and 2021.

The decision to hold the virtual ceremony on June 25 for the Class of 2021 was made as the University continues to follow strict provincial, federal, and international health guidelines that prohibit indoor gatherings of people who do not belong in the same household and that require mandatory physical distancing.

All UNBC graduates in the Class of 2021, including those who attend campuses in Prince George, Terrace, Wilp Wilxo’oskwhl Nisga’a, Fort St. John and Quesnel can participate in the virtual ceremony.
