PRINCE GEORGE – It’s no secret the pandemic has taken a toll on our mental health, changing restrictions has caused increased anxiety, and also depression according to experts.

This week on our ‘To Your Health’ segment we looked at ways to try and avoid, or deal with pandemic fatigue, or the more extreme, pandemic burnout.

The Canadian Mental Health Association of Northern BC says there a couple of ways you can do that all while abiding by current health restrictions:

Mary Lu Spagrud, Manager of Education and Projects for CMHA Northern BC says getting a change of scenery as in a staycation, disconnecting from social media, and trying to find some positivity.

A US academic study completed in 2009 called “Preparing for Pandemic Influenza and its Aftermath: Mental Health Issues Considered,” warned of potential severe effects on mental health long before COVID-19 was a thing.

Some of the data cited in this study from the SARS epidemic showed that 28.9 % of people had PTSD, and 31.2 % had depression after that epidemic.

Suggesting if we had a large worldwide pandemic, that could balloon to be a whole lot worse.
