PRINCE GEORGE – Some good news for the Prince George Airport. Nav Canada is sparing the tower at the airport.

“We’re really pleased with the action taken,” says Gordon Duke, CEO for the Prince George Airport Authority. “Active air traffic control helps ensure smooth operations and reflects our role as an essential service for the north. We received tremendous support from the community and local political leaders, and we want to sincerely thank everyone.”

Local MP Todd Doherty (Cariboo-Prince George) is very familiar with the importance of that tower, having worked at the airport for years. He says the loss of air traffic control would have been devastating to the operation of the airport.

“It is a key cog in our local transportation system, our regional transportation, our provincial nd our national transportation system. Our proximity to a worldwide intermodal port, the fastest marine port to Asia, the Port of Prince Rupert and the third-longest runway in Canada. We have two highway systems that go through here.”

YXS was one of seven Canadian airports that Nav Canada was reviewing for possible closure.
