PRINCE GEORGE—Today marks the National Day of Mourning in Canada where people pay respects to those who lost their lives and were injured in the workplace.

Following health orders, less than six people attended a wreath laying ceremony and held a moment of silence at the Worker’s Memorial Statue near Patricia Boulevard and Queensway.

The pandemic has forced many people to be aware of their health and safety in the workplace environment. But the virus isn’t the only hazard in the workplace.

“On average there’s a thousand people dying, not coming home from work at the end of the day. This day is a time to reflect on the right to refuse unsafe work especially during this time in the pandemic.” said Matt Baker, president of the North Central Labour Council.

Baker emphasizes that everyone should know their surroundings and what they should do to create a safe workplace environment.

“Protect yourself. The most important part of it all is yes making money, but coming home at the end of the day.” said Baker.
