PRINCE GEORGE — Three distinguished professors from the University of Northern British Columbia have been awarded the title of ‘Professor Emeritus’ for their outstanding work in their fields.

They are:

  • Dr. Henry Harder of Health Sciences
  • Dr. Hugues Massicotte of Ecosystem Science and Management
  • Dr. Ross Hoffman of First Nations Studies

Hoffman says the title is a big honor to his life’s work.

“It’s nice to have sort of a formal way to maintain my connection with the university, faculty and students.” said Hoffman.

Hoffman served as a critical part in expanding First Nations studies both in Canada and around the world. Since beginning to work UNBC in 2005, he created several courses for the university and helped as a co-director of a cross-cultural exchange program, partnering with indigenous universities in New Zealand.

“There was always people who helped me along in life, and so now its my role and responsibility to help others.” said Hoffman.

One of his former students said that he’s well-deserving of the prestigious title. Adding that he made a significant impact in her academic career.

“He supported the work I did with my community and guided me through my research process and helped me work with my concerns in doing my research.” said Tannis Reynolds, Lecturer at UNBC

As a non-Aboriginal person, Dr. Hoffman was worried that there wouldn’t be a place for him to pursue this field. But it was his passion to help First Nations communities that kept him going.

“I gradually moved in that direction and that’s where my passion was, learning about different cultures and the struggles that indigenous people had and still have today.”

Now Hoffman says that this award doesn’t mean his life’s work is finished. He plans to continue helping any way he can.

“There’s still students studying at UNBC and if I can write them a letter of reference…they know that If I can be of assistance then I will. I will support them in reaching their goals.”
