Tourism Prince George celebrates Tourism Week
PRINCE GEORGE – Tourism Week in Canada has kicked off and Tourism Prince George is celebrating virtually by encouraging locals to support the tourism industry. Prior to COVID-19, Tourism in Canada was a $105 billion sector, accounted for 2% of Canada’s GDP and employed approximately 1.8 million people, according to the Tourism Industry of Canada.
“Tourism is an ‘industry of industries’ and visitors come for many reasons to a destination,” said Tracey McBride, CEO of Tourism Prince George. “Tourism advocates for inclusion, diversity and sustainable practices and through a values-based approach, it enriches the community as a whole. Everyone plays an important part of ensuring a positive visitor experience and this means tourism is a whole Prince George approach.”
The Northern BC Tourism Association surveyed tourism operators in Northern BC and found that in April of 2021, 31% of businesses were temporarily closed due to COVID-19 and 44% of businesses were operating with a reduction in hours, staff, and/or services.
