Local boy saves bird from being stoned to death

PRINCE GEORGE – Luka Yarmish, heard a bunch of kids yelling and screaming in the bushes between two SD 57 schools. He and his friend decided to see what the commotion was about, only to find a group of students throw stones at a baby crow, that had fallen to the ground.

The area is usually filled with a mixture of students from both DP Todd and Heritage. Yarmish says, the bird was likely knocked out of its nest by a hawk and couldn’t fly back into its nest as it was still too young.

He thinks that’s when the kids heard the bird’s cries and started to attack it. There is a happy ending however, the crow is now in the care of second chance wildlife and luckily will survive.

Yarmish was also told there was another incident with a baby crow, however, that one was killed. This person had posted photos and updates with the bird carcass on social media.

CKPG reached out to Conservation Officers, they sent out this statement:

Currently, this incident is actively under investigation.
Under the BC Wildlife Act, crows are considered category C wildlife.

As per the regulations:
A person does not need a license to kill category C animals. There is no bag limit or expectation to report killing to an officer if done on their own private property or are causing damage.

However if on crown land or of a person’s private property then a person is required to have a hunting license.

For both on and off private property if a category C animal is injured then it must be killed.

However, causing wanton injury and suffering to an animal either wild or domestic is a violation under the Canadian criminal code section 445.1(1) causing unnecessary suffering.

Yarimish, is happy he and his friend were able to save the fledgling but is extremely disappointed with how the other baby crow was treated.
