Cheap airfare coming our way

PRINCE GEORGE – As restrictions start to lift, when it comes to travel, we see a large drop in airfare prices in and around the country. Right after July long weekend, is when prices start to drop on both the air Canada and WestJet websites.

Planning a trip from PG to Vancouver? a one-way ticket will cost you about 76 bucks with both WestJet and Air Canada.Say, you want to fly to Toronto this summer, depending on restrictions? that could cost you about 113 dollars.

In a statement from WestJet they say:

Airfares are dynamic and change according to supply and demand. While, we do see positive booking signs in some regions across the country, in the absence of federal safe restart travel framework, demand trends continue to fluctuate and are being impacted by inconsistent travel guidance and policies. As we continue to witness a very successful vaccination rollout across Canada and reopening plans that promote the return of safe travel based on vaccination levels, we are watching provincial reopening plans carefully and as demand increases fare prices will naturally adjust based on supply and demand.

It may be worth noting for your story, that the pandemic has undoubtedly added costs to the travel journey and we continue to be concerned with third-party fee increases that will negatively affect ticket prices in the long-term for Canadian travellers.

While countries around the world have taken action to limit or defer costs to the aviation industry during the pandemic, Canada’s situation has remained exacerbated by double-digit increases that are beyond our control. Some airports have indicated they are increasing their Airport Improvement Fees (AIF) by as much as 52 percent which doesn’t help this challenging situation.

Additionally, in September 2020, WestJet announced an increase to domestic traveller surcharges to account for NAV CANADA rate increases of almost 30 percent. Ultimately, burdening travellers who have been severely impacted by this pandemic with incremental costs, outside of our control, will only serve to undermine Canada’s economic recovery.

As demonstrated by many of our neighbouring nations, who have based their travel restart framework on science, data and successful vaccination rates, we are doing everything we can to ensure the safest travel experience for our guests and WestJetters. We are very aware and understand that as restrictions ease, many of our guests may be returning to air travel for the first time in more than 15 months and we are confident that we will be their most affordable choice to connect them to their family, friends and favourite destinations across the country.
