PRINCE GEORGE – 7-on-7 football has been running in Prince George for three years now. It started with the organization named Game Ready Elite and has since evolved into Kodiak Elite.

“The connections we’ve created with our Kodiaks programs and Game Ready programs the last three years are all across Canada,” said Craig Briere, President of Kodiaks Football.

“We are actually one of the founding members of the 7-on-7 Association of Canada. We are the smallest market team, the smallest market program, but through our contacts in Calgary and Vancouver, we’ve got a seat at the table. It’s just an opportunity for our kids to exposure.”

Briere says the 7-on-7 game is all passing and as a result, it showcases a fast and exciting form of football.

“It’s one of the most fun means of playing football. I wish they had 7-on-7 back when I played because watching these kids play it, having a part of it, it’s one of the most exciting fast-paced things you could play.”

Games are 20 minutes in length, and Briere says in those 20 minutes there can be multiple changes of possession, pivotal moments, and big plays.

“It’s crazy fun and the kids enjoy it, and that’s the biggest part,” says Briere.

Further exposure will come in July when their competitive travel team will head to Calgary after the travel restrictions get lifted, where they’ll have the eyes of USports scouts, but also the scouts of a number of NCAA schools. It will be the first-ever Western Canadian 7-on-7 Championships.

“We have some talented kids in this community,” admits Briere. “We have some talented kids in Northern BC. Just getting them in front of those people is going to open up doors for them.”

And the players themselves are excited for the opportunity, especially as they look to extend their football playing careers.

“Football has always been a big dream of mine. Guys like Coach Craig (Briere) truly believe I can achieve that goal and achieve that dream. The exposure and events I have gone to through Kodiaks and Game Ready 7-on-7, I could have never done that without them,” said Hayden Matheson, an 18-year-old linebacker.

“There’s a lot of eyes on it. It’s the first big recruiting (event) in Canada since the whole COVID thing so that’s huge for us football players,” said 17-year-old Noah Lank. “I’m in Grade 11 right now but a lot of these Grade 12’s, they didn’t really get much in the way of exposure (due to the pandemic). This is huge because there’s going to be a lot of eyes on it, but it’s important that we play our game and focus on that.”

The tournament will kick off on July 3rd and run through to July 4th with teams from all across the Western Provinces of Canada.

Scouts from Canadian university football programs will be in attendance, and scouts from NCAA schools will be tuned in through the event’s online live stream.
