House of Commons passes NDP motion calling for immediate reconciliation
SMITHERS — An NDP motion calling on the federal government to stop fighting Indigenous children in court and implement the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to action passed Monday in the House of Commons.
It comes following the tragic discovery at the former Kamloops Residential School. The motion also called on Ottawa to take concrete steps towards reconciliation with Indigenous people.
Skeena-Bulkley Valley NDP MP Taylor Bachrach spoke during the debate, raising some of the heartbreaking stories from residential school survivors in the Northwest.
The NDP is also calling on the federal government to implement the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action regarding investigations of missing Indigenous children at residential schools, and to provide adequate resources to help residential school survivors heal.
