TYH: Library debuts new cognitive care kits

Jun 8, 2021 | 4:46 PM

PRINCE GEORGE – The Prince George Public Library is trying to get the word out about their new kits for those experiencing cognitive decline.

The nine kits available at the library were funded by a grant from the United Way of Northern BC.

Different kits are available for those in different stages of their journeys according to Amy Dhanjal from the Prince George Public Library.

You can sign them out as you would a book from the library, with the hope people can use the kits and their contents as a springboard to create their own.

Materials in the kits are designed to support the skills and abilities of people living with dementia.

They encourage the use of skills the disorder has not affected, such as fine and gross motor skills, reading, spelling, and sorting.

The kits were inspired and informed by a similar project at Burlington Public Library and Halton Hills Public Library in Ontario, the kits were developed using evidence-based concepts from Dementiability.com.
