Periods are a fact of life: period promise campaign launches in Northern BC

PRINCE GEORGE – Periods are a fact of life but access to necessary menstrual products can be challenging for some.

“No one makes a choice to menstruate, so no one should have to make a choice as to whether or not they can afford to manage it.” Says Trista, from United Way of Northern BC. “It’s heartbreaking to know that so many go without the necessary products simply due to affordability or accessibility, especially when this is a natural bodily function”

United Way of Northern BC has launched its Period Promise campaign. They will be collecting menstrual products, donations, and raising awareness about period poverty.

Over the last couple of years, the BC Government has provided support to the campaign.

“No one should face challenges in accessing basic necessities, and that includes menstrual products. As part of my mandate letter, I’m continuing to build on the work being done by many great organizations to end period poverty in BC.” Said Minister Nicholas Simons.

Simons also added that they have ensured that K-12 schools have free menstrual products for students, the first provincial-level initiative of its kind in Canada.

“When you hear stories about people who have to make decisions between buying groceries and buying products, it just hits you. 25% of people have missed work, school or did not go to social events or functions because of this bodily function.” Said Lorna Bihori from United Way of Northern BC

The campaign will run from May 28th to June 30th in communities around Northern BC, including Prince George.

“In each of the communities, we have set up an agency who will distribute – and collection places that are willing accepting and monitoring products.” Continued Lorna Bihori, United Way of Northern BC
