PRINCE GEORGE – Ladder 21 is the biggest of the trucks in the Prince George Fire Department’s fleet. It’s decked out with a 110-foot ladder and powered with a 600-horse Cummins diesel engine. And it is the newest in the department’s fleet, purchased in April. As such, every single firefighter in the department is trained on it.

“It’s just about being patient,” explains Bryan Burleigh. “At the end of the day, we’re professional drivers and we need to be able to read the road and plan our routes and predict what other people on the roadway are going to do.”

He says, when responding to an emergency, the fire truck will generally stay in the left lane, so when you hear those sirens, keep to the right lane.

“Ideally, if we could people to move over when they see us. We understand that other motorists have other things going on in their vehicle and they’re distracted and they don’t always hear us or see us until the last minute. But ultimately, we don’t want people to panic. Just move over when it’s convenient.”

The Motor Vehicle Act says drivers need to pull over and stop their vehicles when the fire truck is approaching.
