Jun 22, 2021 | 5:26 PM

It can happen to anyone, anywhere, in a split second your life can be permanently altered by a brain injury.

This month brain injury groups across the country are raising awareness about what so many people live with with every day.

“Many Canadians live with acquired brain injury, more in fact than Canadians who live with HIV-AIDS, spinal cord injuries, and multiple sclerosis combined,” says Paul Zorzi, Case Manager with the PG Brain Injury Group.

Brain injuries are a big problem in Canada, 452 Canadians suffer a traumatic brain event every day, boiling down to one every three minutes.

“I think the number one thing people can do is remember to use their seatbelts. So many people are in motor vehicle accidents, so many people have young people in their cars,” says Zorzi.

A variety of injuries can cause trauma to the brain as well, from having a bad fall, to sports, to crashing your bike.

Bicycle crashes are the number one sporting reason for a head injury in Canada.

A recent survey conducted in Canada by Brain Injury Associations revealed that 61 percent of respondents cited lack of awareness about brain injury as a key issue.

A key reason why June has been donned as the Brain Injury Awareness Month.
