PRINCE GEROGE – Draiciee Wilson and her husband driving along Massey Drive Tuesday night when they noticed something on the sidewalk.

“As we passed by, my husband said ‘stop there is a person lying there.’ So we pulled over, he got out, and there was an older fellow about 50 or 60 years old,” said Wilson.

Even at 8 pm, temperatures were still high and Wilson said their main concern was that the man was suffering from heat stress.

“I have no idea how long he had been lying here, it was so hot. Even us just standing outside was brutal. It was so, so hot,” continued Wilson.

Wilson says the man became unresponsive on the hot pavement. They called 911 and even reached out to the PG Questions and Answers page on Facebook for help. The couple then waited with the man until paramedics arrived.

“A general reminder to people to check on the vulnerable and have patience with the paramedics. Our paramedics and dispatchers are under a lot of pressure with the incredible number and volume of calls,” said President of the Ambulance and Paramedics of BC, Troy Clifford.

A nurse did stop to assess the man as well and determined that he was not suffering from an overdose. Wilson said she is disappointed that so many other people just passed by the man.

“Regardless of the circumstances, I don’t know why people don’t stop and help. I was raised, no matter what walk of life you are, every life is important. I felt a lot of heartbreak, my husband felt a lot of heartbreak knowing that so many people just drove by. Even in the downtown area, there are people on the ground, and people just drive by,” said Wilson.

As Prince George continues to push through this heatwave, be sure to monitor for heat stress-related symptoms. Those symptoms could be dizziness, fainting; nausea or vomiting; rapid breathing and heartbeat, and extreme dehydration.
