PRINCE GEORGE – Following a thunderstorm across the province, which resulted in 41,000 lightning strikes, local governments are on high alert. But, in this region, there is a double threat.

“We’re actively monitoring right now for both flood events and wildfire,” says Renee McCloskey with the Regional District of Fraser Fort George. “And they’re both the result of this extreme heatwave that we’re dealing with.”

The BC River Forecast Centre has the entire regional district under a flood warning.

“With the fire season, with the hot weather, the fire index is much higher,” explains Adam Davey, the Director for Community Services and Public Safety. “The City took precautions to ban burning and fireworks this weekend and we’re just trying to be as prepared as we can be.”

Both local governments are asking households to be prepared with a 72-hour emergency kit. It should include things like:

*seasonally-appropriate clothing,

*medications,

*first aid kit cash or credit cards,

*important documents such marriage and birth certificates,

*photos,

*keys,

*blankets and,

personal mementos.

And should you need to leave your home, consider:

*pets or livestock

*unhook appliances, except for the fridge,

*leave your lights on,

*lock your doors,

*make a plan for where are you going to go, and

*notify family.

The City has 16 muster points within its boundaries. They are all within schools and are colour coordinated with garbage zones.
