PRINCE GEORGE–If you’re heading out to the lake this summer, you might be taking the canoe or kayak out for a paddle. But what if you could be training for the BC Summer Games while paddling?

One local club is doing just that.

The Prince George Canoe and Kayak Club is hosting a summer camp this year for young kids to get them prepared for next year’s BC Summer Games.

“I don’t need to expect anything, they’re showing results, they’re showing results, I’m really happy with the progress.” said Angus Ball, Head Coach of PG Canoe & Kayak Club

The camp is to train kids who are new to paddling, or have done a little bit of paddling in the past. Kids will learn advanced techniques that they can use at the next year’s games.

They’ll be coached by a team of experienced paddlers, including some who took home medals at previous summer games.

“When they’re at the program, they’re gonna learn paddling techniques like how to use the A-frame and the catch. How to do a draw, how to do an exit and then a recovery position, so there’s four positions When they’re in the boat, they’re learning to do speed, endurance and balance techniques” said Bini Ball, President of PG Canoe and Kayak Club.

The camp runs for a week starting on July 12th. Kids born between 2006 to 2009 can sign up. The club is also gearing to send eight of its own to next year’s games, including four extra spots for Indigenious kids.

“It’s around $250 per child and that includes the plane or the buses, the transportation fee. There’s a whole bunch of parties and game nights; and dances. It’s really fun and it’s included in that $250.” said Bailey Yearley, Paddler.

If you’re interested in taking part in the camp, you can visit the club’s Facebook page or website.
