PRINCE GEORGE – Several hikers were evacuated over the weekend from Mount Robson Provincial Park.

Witnesses say as many as 40 people had to taken out by a helicopter due to flooding, Lisa Keim and her friend were part of those evacuated.

“We couldn’t believe it, we thought we were pretty experienced in the backcountry and that was nothing that we’ve ever experienced before,” says Keim. “It was honestly pretty scary.”

BC Parks Rangers posted this notice on their tent this past weekend informing hikers to pack up their things and head back to be evacuated.

There is still no word on exactly how many people were evacuated or the current conditions of the Berg Lake trail.

The BC Parks website says the trail will be closed until July 18th due to the flooding, saying “the trail has sustained substantial damage as a result of flooding. Assessment and repairs are commencing as soon as possible. Please check back for further updates as a firm reopening date can not be provided at this time.”

The Berg Lake Trail is a world-renowned backcountry hiking trail. Gaining just under 800 metres in 23 kilometres, the trail traverses three biogeoclimatic zones according to the BC Parks website.
