PRINCE GEORGE – Equine therapy, also known as horse-assisted therapy, is a treatment that includes equine activities and/or an equine environment. In this week’s To Your Health, we share its benefits and how this could help anyone dealing with mental, physical, or emotional issues.

Equine -Assisted Therapy is often used to treat a variety of issues like ADD, Anxiety, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Dementia, Depression, Developmental Delay, and Genetic Syndromes just to name a few.

Laurie Niedermayer who is the owner/ operator and the lead therapist for Triquetra Therapeutic Services says Equine-Assisted-Therapy has many benefits including help in building confidence, self-efficiency, communication, trust, perspective, social skills, impulse control, and learning boundaries.

Horses have similar behaviors to humans, such as social and responsive behaviors, and a unique ability to create a connection with each patient.

Niedermayer says, often when patients arrive, just being outside in an open setting can quickly relax them, sometimes it’s important to just get away from the noise.

Programs roughly runs for about eight weeks and there are also workshops to register for. The sessions are open to anyone and Laurie says she can work as a team with you and your therapist. If you would like to learn more or book a consult with Niedermayer, you can head to her website to view the different options available.
