PRINCE GEORGE – Chief of the Lheidli T’enneh took some time to issue a pointed message to West Coast Olefins and the proposed gas plant it is proposing from Pineview.

“It’s not welcome in Lheidli T’enneh territory. We don’t want them here. And I know Pineview doesn’t want them, here,” stated Chief Dolleen Logan, a week after hundreds gathered in the Pineview Community Hall to express concerns over the proposed plant.

The project was first announced in 2019 and was to be located in the BCR Industrial Site. Then it moved north of the city and, now, it is being proposed for Pineview.

“Our communities have stated repeatedly that we want nothing to do with Ken James or West Coast Olefins,” she goes on. “He is ignoring the fact that we own our unceded ancestral lands and that to gain approval from both the federal and BC governments for such projects, you must have our support.”

Since the latest plans were made public, Mayor and Council have been inundated with emails. But, as one City Councillor states, it’s out of Council’s hands.

“Absolutely,” says Councillor Frank Everitt. “It’s part of the Environment Ministry and they have to make the first decision. And now that [West Coast Olefins] has set a different site, that evaluation has to happen before the City is responsible to do anything.”

Chief Logan says she has been hearing from residents of Pineview and has a message for the proponent of the project.

“Hopefully, one of these days Ken James will get the message and move on!”
