PRINCE GEORGE – Since being called up to Triple-A’s Iowa Cubs from the Tennessee Smokies, Prince George’s Jared Young has been on a batting tear. Through 17 games, the 26-year-old has had 58 at-bats with 17 hits, seven runs, and three homers, and has been likely catching the eyes of those high up in the system with Major League Baseball’s Chicago Cubs.

“I knew if I came up to Triple-A and continued what I was doing in Double-A that, give or take a few days you have a bad day, success would carry over,” said Young. “I think I’ve been swinging a little bit more. Honestly, I think I’ve been chasing some pitches and striking out a little bit more than I would want to and not walking, but when I do put the ball in play I’ve had success.”

When Young first joined the Cubs Triple-A affiliate, he went one for seven with three strikeouts in his first two games at Iowa. It was a tough transition to the next level of play, but he quickly found his rhythm.

“I think with anything new it takes a little bit of a learning curve and you’re going to have some jitters just like anything. I think I let them get the best of me just a little bit. I was swinging a lot, wasn’t really seeing the ball well. If it was coming at me I was swinging,” explained Young of his early struggles adapting to the Triple-A level of play. “Sometimes that works out but most of the time that doesn’t work too well. I just needed to calm myself down.”

In the next 10 games after those first two initial outings, Young saw his numbers jump to a 3-53 batting average, along with a 3-95 on-base percentage and a 5-59 slugging percentage. Major League rosters are set to expand as of September 1st, and while nothing is set in stone per se, Young has been demonstrating his ability to adapt to the heightened level of competition.

“You do what you can do here,” explained Young. “If you’re thinking about going to a different team, success is not going to follow you. I think saying anything more than that would be getting way ahead of myself.”

Young admits he’s coming around to welcoming the bad days knowing he’s too going to have good days on the diamond as well. While the Show awaits, the former Prince George Knight is focusing on creating more consistency with his play as he gets more comfortable, and perhaps one day the show will be calling.
