.PRINCE GEORGE – Just days after mass protests outside hospitals in BC, concerns are mounting for the number of people still yet to be vaccinated in Northern Health.

Unvaccinated people account for over 90% of people in ICU’s across BC, while holding a risk to be hospitalized 34 times greater than someone who has had both doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.

“We’ve seen a rapid rise in COVID-19 cases across the region,” said Chief Medical Health Officer of Northern Health, Dr. Jong Kim. “If you take it from the end of July to the end of August we’re seeing a six-fold increase in cases.”

Dr. Kim noted most of those cases are among unvaccinated people.

Northern Health is unique in that the vaccination rate across some parts is extremely high, areas like Kitimat and Prince Rupert, while also containing areas like Vanderhoof where only 57 percent of people aged 12 and older have two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.

The Nechako -Bulkley Valley is one of the areas in BC currently experiencing a surge in COVID-19 cases according to Ministry of Health data.

The Peace River region both North and South have also experienced a rise in cases, while under half of the population over 12 have received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.

68% of the population in Prince George 12 and older have two doses of a vaccine.
