COVID-19 claims nine more lives, including two in northern B.C.

VICTORIA — The provincial government has announced 820 more cases of COVID-19 in British Columbia.

It brings the total number of cases in B.C. since the pandemic began to 173,159. Of those, 165,027 people have recovered.

There are 5,850 active cases of COVID-19 in the province. Of the active cases, 281 people are in hospital and 135 are in intensive care.

The new/active cases include:

* 264 new cases in Fraser Health
* Total active cases: 1,750

* 112 new cases in Vancouver Coastal Health
* Total active cases: 938

* 253 new cases in Interior Health
* Total active cases: 1,828

* 101 new cases in Northern Health
* Total active cases: 782

* 90 new cases in Island Health
* Total active cases: 539

* no new cases of people who reside outside of Canada
* Total active cases: 13

Over the past 24 hours, there have been nine new deaths, including two in the Northern Health region. It brings the death toll up north to 1,856. The two people who died were residents of Jubilee Lodge in Prince George where Northern Health says 19 residents have tested positive for the virus, including one staff member.

As for vaccinations, 85.5% of eligible people 12 and older in B.C. have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine and 78% received their second dose.

From Sept. 2-8, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 78.4% of cases and from Aug. 26-Sept. 8, they accounted for 86.6% of hospitalizations.
