Alberta seeks assistance from other provinces, due to increasing COVID cases

PRINCE GEORGE – If you have been paying any sort of attention to the COVID-19 situation in Alberta, then you know that things are looking dire.

“Because of this increasing pressure, we are taking two extremely difficult steps,” explained Dr. Vera Yin from Alberta Health Services. “We will be reaching out to other provinces to see if they have any available ICU space so Albertans can get the care they need.”

After that announcement Wednesday, the question is, will B.C. offer help? And what will mean for our province?

CKPG reached out to the province for comment. Here is the written statement they sent back:

“The Ministry of Health met with our Alberta counterparts today. Given the current demands on B.C.’s healthcare system, we will not be able to assist with taking patients at this time. However, we have told Alberta that if there are things we can do to support them, we will. And if we can take patients on in the future, we will.

We are in a global pandemic, and our thoughts are with Albertans as they respond to COVID-19 in their province. We salute Alberta’s healthcare workers and all healthcare workers who are working tirelessly to care for patients and protect people and communities in the face of great challenge.”

-Minister Adrian Dix

According to the bc CDC dashboard, the province has 291 people in hospital with 134 of those in the ICU. In the North, 45 people are in hospital with 14 of those in the ICU.
