PRINCE GEORGE – According to new regulations released by the federal government earlier this week, all travellers departing from Canadian airports will be required to be fully vaccinated, beginning October 30th. That includes the Prince George Airport and it is welcome news.

“As an airport, we’re really pleased that the federal government has stepped forward and given us a guideline that we can use,” explains Gordon Duke, President & CEO of the Prince George Airport Authority. “And we believe that ultimately it’s going to increase confidence in all of our airport users, from employees to travellers to contractors, that the airport is a safer place to be.”

Northern BC is home to a number of industrial camps, many of which are fly-in camps, such as Site C. BC Hydro recently released this statement:

“BC Hydro will require proof of COVID-19 vaccination from all employees and contractors working at a BC Hydro work site or facility across the province, including the construction site for the Site C project.”

“More than 6,000 BC Hydro employees throughout B.C. will be required to be fully vaccinated by November 22, 2021. This date aligns BC Hydro with the date announced by the Province of B.C. for the Public Service Agency and allows enough time for unvaccinated employees to be fully vaccinated. ”

“Consultants and employees of contractors and sub-contractors will be required to be fully vaccinated by January 10, 2022. BC Hydro is not the direct employer for contract workers and the additional time is required to allow those companies time to align with BC Hydro’s vaccination requirements and implement the required systems and processes. BC Hydro will continue to work with its employees, unions and contractors in the coming weeks to further define the vaccination policy and provide details for accommodation for those who are unable to be vaccinated due to a medically-approved exemption.”

Meanwhile, there will be a short transition period during which travellers not yet fully vaccinated will be able to travel if they can show a negative COVID-19 molecular test within 72 hours of travel. This transition period will end on November 30th.

“We do also have rapid testing available in the airport here,” says Duke. “As part of the regulation, there’s a bit of a let there for 30 days for someone who doesn’t have both vaccinations, they can get a rapid test here as well.”
