Parents blocked from watching volleyball tournament

PRINCE GEORGE – Parents who wanted to watch a local high school girls volleyball this past weekend were out of luck at the College of New Caledonia.

Across BC, admission to sporting events, restaurants, and other non-essential businesses is only allowed for those who have received their COVID-19 vaccine.

At the College of New Caledonia, access to the gymnasium also requires proof of a COVID-19 vaccine due to recent changes to public health orders while all School District 57 facilities do not require the vaccine for entry.

At the volleyball tournament held this past weekend in Prince George, because showing proof of vaccination was required at CNC, Cedars Christian School did not allow any spectators inside the gym.

To have spectators, Cedar Christian School would’ve needed to check for proof of vaccination at the entrance to the CNC gymnasium.

One of the parents denied entry to watch her Grade 9 daughter spoke to CKPG News on Wednesday, she claims she even offered to do the checking of vaccination cards, and the school declined her offer.

“They decided that because not everybody could spectate, nobody could spectate,” says Tasha Sirois.

When asked about the situation, Shane Nelson the Principal of Cedars Christian School says the late notice around the vaccine requirement which dropped late last week made it difficult.

“We regret that people weren’t able to watch their kids that weekend,” says Nelson.

“In the past, we had moved tournaments to avoid having something different than the school district, so at that moment, we made the decision to run the tournament without spectators,” says Nelson.

Nelson says he regrets what happened over the weekend, adding he would personally do his best to make sure in the future that nothing like this ever happened again. In the future, he added the school may decide to choose a different venue.
