PRINCE GEORGE—The BC Supreme Court has ruled on the City of Prince George’s injunction request for two encampments.

The city requested to remove the encampments on George Street and the one on Lower Patricia Avenue.

The ruling is allowing the city to remove the George Street encampment. The City says it must be removed within seven days (October 29th.)

The Lower Patricia Blvd encampment can remain until suitable housing is available.

“The City took this court action for the safety and protection of all of our citizens. While the provision of housing is outside of our jurisdiction, we will continue to work closely with BC Housing and other agencies to ensure the people in the encampments get the services and housing they need,” said Mayor Lyn Hall.

In its argument, the City maintained the plan was to relocate the homeless to more suitable housing, such as the Knight’s Inn which has been purchased by BC Housing.

The city says its reviewing the decision from Chief Justice Hinkson and will take necessary, appropriate legal steps.

We contacted BC Assembly of First Nations Chief Terry Teegee following the decision and he says he was pleased.
