Protest held outside City Hall in support for people of Sudan
PRINCE GEORGE– Protesters rallied Saturday outside of City Hall in protest of the recent military coup in the African country of Sudan.
The country of Sudan has been ruled by a shaky alliance between the military and civilian groups since 2019. However, on October 25th the military took control, dissolving the transitional government, and temporarily apprehending current Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok. It puts Sudan’s quest toward democracy in jeopardy after the project began just 2 years ago.
Lt. Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Sudan’s top general, orchestrated the power grab, firing any ambassadors who resisted the takeover as well as having the Sudanese military shut down the internet. In response, protesters returned to the streets in cities and towns across Sudan to denounce the military takeover. An act that was joined by many PG residents last weekend.
