UPDATE 2:53 PM

After two meetings that lasted about 2 and a half hours, the future of the proposed natural gas extraction project in Pineview is still in the air. The Regional District of Fraser Fort George met again this afternoon and ended up deciding not to hold a public consultation period. During this time, it was also decided to continue discussions about the project at a later date.

PRINCE GEORGE- The future of the proposed West Coast Olefins Natural Gas Extraction project is still up in the air. This morning, directors of the Regional District of Fraser Fort George voted on whether or not they were in favor of moving the application to the Agricultural Land Commission, and the results were a 7-7 tie.

During conversations leading up to the vote, the concept of hosting a public consultation period was discussed. This idea was met with plenty of back and forth among directors. Specifically, between Director Dannielle Alan and Director Lyn Hall. While Director Lyn Hall did support the motion of hosting a consultation process to ensure enough information is provided from all parties involved, Director Dannielle Alan said it wasn’t necessary because the board was in fact, following the necessary steps already and had enough information to make a final decision. Despite being disputed by Director Alan and a couple of others such as Director Bill Empey, the board will once again be meeting at 1:30 pm to discuss the possibility of a public consultation period.

The vote was made in front of dozens of people who were rallying against the project. Over 2,000 people have signed an online petition advocating against the building of the project, which would be located in Pineview.

CKPG News reached out to West Coast Olefins CEO, Ken James, however, he refused to comment.

Information will be updated as it becomes available.
