PRINCE GEORGE- Ron Brent Elementary is now home to a new mural that showcases the Dakelh Lifelong Learning Model. The wall portrays the concepts of truth and honesty, responsibility, respect, self-Identity and community.

Ashley Sarai, grade 4 and 5 teacher at Ron Brent says the project is a movement towards reconciliation. She adds it teaches students about concepts that are needed for everyday life.

“We refer to it everyday, almost anything we do, any conflicts, any schoolwork, if we’re missing anything we always refer back to responsibility,” she explained.

Kelsey MacDonald, Indigenous lead resource teacher, says the idea for the projected started with her teaching the students about Dakelh history. She explained that students chose and researched animals that best represented each concept, and the animals were then showcased on the mural.

“We embedded the Dakelh ways of knowing and understanding through this process and it allowed students to take part in this process, and it allowed for student voice and agency,” added MacDonald.

MacDonald and Sarai are hoping this will become a yearly school project.
