PRINCE GEORGE — It was a weekend trip to Vancouver Island that both University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) basketball teams wish could have gone differently.

The men and women Timberwolves dropped both their respective two-game series against the University of Victoria Vikes.

The men T-Wolves were blown out 83-49 on Friday, with Tyrell Laing leading the team in scoring 13 points, while shoot four-for-eight from the field and adding three assists and two rebounds.

On Saturday, the men lead by two at halftime and kept it within six points heading into the fourth, but ultimately fell 92-72. Fareed Shittu led the team with 23 points and eight rebounds, while shooting nine-for-15 from the field.

The women T-Wolves suffered a nearly identical fate. They were beaten by UVic 84-59 on Friday, with Alina Shakirova leading the team with 25 points and nine rebound while shooting nine-for-18. The T-Wolves then led Saturday’s game by one point after the first quarter, before losing in a closer 83-68 game. Shakirova led the team in scoring again with 18.

Both UNBC squads are off for the remainder of 2021. The men are 2-6 on the season; fifth in the West Division. The women, however, are in a tie for third in the West Division with a 4-4 record.
