PRINCE GEORGE– When the holidays roll lights, candles, Christmas trees, baking, and staying nice and cozy often come to mind.

However even though all those activities are a great way to get into the holiday spirit, they can also lead to fires.

According to the National Fire Protection Association,

  • Half of all home heating fires each year occur from December to February Lighting equipment is involved in almost half of home Christmas tree fires
  • More than 1 of every 5 Christmas tree fires and 2 of every 5 decoration fires were caused by a heat source being too close to them.
  • And Christmas is the peak day for candle fires. 3 of every 5 candle fires start when something that can burn is too close to it and they are also the cause of half of the home decorating fires.

So how do you prevent these fires? One of the most helpful things you can do is keep your real Christmas tree hydrated by checking if it has water every couple of hours and watering it daily. You can also buy certain products to help keep the tree fireproof.
