‘It’s so hazardous’: City councillor raises concerns over crosswalk

PRINCE GEORGE – As snow clearing continues in BC’s Northern Capital, a certain crosswalk on PG Pulp Mill Road has gotten the attention of Councillor Brian Skakun.

“It’s so hazardous,” said Skakun, “I have people at the mill coming up to me on a daily basis saying look I almost hit some people, I had someone talk to me last week they almost wiped out a family of four.”

The crosswalk in question was approved by the City of Prince George in October.

The area highlighted in yellow is where pedestrians are currently crossing instead of using the signals.

Skakun is not disappointed with having one, only disappointed with having the crossing in the location it is.

“In my opinion, the crosswalk is in the wrong spot,” said Skakun.

According to the city in a statement, the existing crosswalk was designed by a qualified engineer and installed in cooperation with Canfor and the Northern Lights Estate Winery at the expense of winery.

All crossings in Prince George adhere to the Transportation Association of Canada guidelines and City standards.

The City approved the installation of the crosswalk in October, having taken into consideration factors such as visibility, pedestrian traffic volume, and the nature of road users.
