Prince George expected to warm up this weekend

Jan 4, 2022 | 11:05 AM

PRINCE GEORGE- Environment Canada had some good news for Prince George residents who are tired of the cold weather that has prompted another extreme cold warning. The Northern Capital is expected to warm up on Sunday and Monday as highs of -8 and -2 are expected, respectively. Meteorologist Brian Proctor says the warm period is supposed to last a little longer than the one this weekend when it reached minus 8.

This warm spell is expected to come after daytime highs in the minus 20’s and nighttime lows in the minus 30’s over the next few days. Environment Canada is warning that frostbite could occur within minutes of skin exposure to the extreme cold, as the windchill could make it feel like minus 41 this evening and tomorrow (Wednesday) morning.

Proctor says the pattern of extreme cold followed by short bursts of warmth isn’t typical but has been seen from time to time in the PG area. The average high for the week of January 3-7 is around minus 6 degrees in Prince George, so it is expected to be a much colder week than usual.

Currently, Prince George has about 56 cm or 18-19 inches of snow on the ground, a near-record amount for this time of year. This comes after the community saw about 9 cm over the past 48 hours. Environment Canada is expecting more flurries throughout the rest of the week.
