‘It is a concern for us’: SD57 planning for potential functional closures

PRINCE GEORGE – With the rapid spread of the COVID-19 Omicron variant, School District 57 is working on contingency plans for possible functional closures when students return.

A functional closure is only necessary when there is not enough staff to replace those ill and not able to come to work.

“It is a concern for us,” said Acting Superintendent of SD57, Cindy Heitman. “That’s work that we are doing this week, putting in contingency plans should we have a situation where we have so many staff away.”

Earlier this week, BC Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry told businesses they should be prepared to lose up to one-third of their staff at a given time due to COVID-19. Dr. Henry also highlighted how important it is for schools to stay open.

A reduced isolation period for those double vaccinated against the virus will help according to the Prince George District Teachers Association, although functional closures are still something very possible.

Enhanced safety measures are also set for BC schools when students return on January 10.

Those include staggered start and end times for students, as well as staggered recess and lunchtimes in an effort for better social distancing.

More teachers have been hired in School District 57 since September in an effort to provide better backfilling coverage of teachers not able to come to work.

The BCTF is especially concerned about the low vaccination rates for children in Northern BC where less than 20% of children 5 and older have one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
