Prince George Approves Transit Fare Hikes, Changes Take Effect September 6

PRINCE GEORGE – Prince George city council has agreed to raise local transit fares, choosing Option 1 from a recent BC Transit review. The new fares will take effect on September 6, 2026, and could increase by up to 50 cents per ride over the next two years.

The single-ride cash fare will go from $2.50 to $3 by 2028. This is the first fare increase since 2014. Day passes will go up from $5 to $6, and paper tickets will be removed as part of these changes.

With Option 1, the adult 30-day pass will rise from $60 to $72 by 2028. Concession passes for students and seniors will go from $50 to $60. Student semester passes will also increase, moving from $135 to $180 by 2028.

BC Transit expects this plan to bring in about $157,000 more in revenue each year over the next two years, an 8 percent increase. However, they also predict there could be almost 36,000 fewer rides each year.

The fare increases are happening because the transit system is under financial pressure. Right now, fares pay for about 20 percent of operating costs, which is less than the 28 percent average for similar systems in B.C. Each trip costs $5.37 to operate, while the average elsewhere is $4.60. Even after the increases, Prince George fares will still be below the national average of $3.50 for a single ride in 2023.

The report also suggests launching a new EcoPASS program that would allow employers and event organizers to buy transit credits in bulk. It also recommends promoting the current ProPASS workplace program more, since it offers a 15 percent discount, but not many people use it.

HandyDART fares will go up, along with regular transit fares, to keep both services consistent.

Council also agreed to other changes, like ending paper tickets and updating U-PASS and ProPASS prices. All these changes will take effect after the required notice period, before the September rollout.
