Relief rolled out for business

PRINCE GEORGE – “We have your back.”

Those were the words from Jobs Minister Ravi Kahlon prior to announcing details of the COVID Closure Relief Grants.

Businesses that were ordered to fully close on Dec. 22, 2021, including bars, nightclubs and lounges that do not serve full meals, gyms, fitness and adult dance centres and event venues that can no longer hold events, can apply for relief grants of between $1,000 and $10,000. Funds from the program, which is expected to support more than 3,000 businesses, can help with expenses such as rent, employee wages, insurance, maintenance and utilities.

“So a gym with up to five employees could receive up to $5,000 of non-repayable grant money and, because of the recent changes to the federal government, could also receive wage and rent supports of up to 75% under the federal government’s Local Lockdown Program. The Canada Worker Lockdown Benefit provides $300 a week in income support to eligible workers who are directly affected by a COVID-19-related public health order and who have lost 50% or more of their income.”

While it is a relief that businesses can access both funds simultaneously is also welcome to the Prince George Chamber of Commerce. The government faced criticism of the length of time it took to roll out the program. It was announced 48 hours after the Provincial Health Officer made the order, but it took until now to get it ready. Minister Kahlon says those businesses that have accessed grant funding in the past will be fast-tracked.

“Fast-tracking means a couple of weeks versus, like, three to four weeks,” says Todd Corrigall, CEO of the Chamber of Commerce. ‘ That can be too late for some businesses.”

He says, if businesses were so sacrificing as to close their doors, again, then the supports need to be reciprocated.
