LNG Canada provides project update

NORTHERN BC – It is the largest private sector investment in Canadian history and the LNG Canada project in Kitimat had a busy 2021, despite the pandemic.

“Overall, the LNG Canada project is now over halfway done,” says Peter Zebedee, CEO of LNG Canada. “It’s over 50 percent complete. It really shows when you look at the project site itself.”

To date, LNG Canada has awarded $3.6 billion in contracts and procurements, with $2.8 billion of that going to First Nations business. Even before a final investment decision was made on the project, LNG Canada was in close contact with members of the Haisla First Nation, which is now looking to the future.

“The main goal behind this was to provide an opportunity for our membership,” says Crystal Smith, Chief Councillor of the Haisla First Nation. “We want an independent and in order to do that, we need independent members. Whether that’s through employment today, but also focussing on the hugely on the career opportunities. Not only with LNG Canada but also beyond that.”

The project will initially export a total of 6.5 million tonnes per year of natural gas heading primarily to Asia. Ultimately, the project may add two more processors and increase total production to 26 million tonnes per year.
