2022: The Year of the Garden

PRINCE GEORGE – The federal government has declared 2022 the Year of the Garden and the City will soon proclaim June 18th Garden Day.

“There’s a movement among communities all across Canada to declare that and to proclaim it. Because really we’re wanting to highlight the important thing horticulture is to all of our communities.”

Each year, the David Douglas Botanical Garden Society hosts a massive plant sale and each year there’s a growing trend.

“We are seeing more and more people interested in growing vegetables,” says Linda Naess, President of the Society. “And I think the nurseries around town are seeing that, too. A lot of times, seeds are sold out way, way earlier.”

She says the price of some fruits and vegetables is also urging people to grow their own. And the food shortages that have happened sporadically for the past five years clinch the deal for some.

But on a lighter note, Councillor Frizzell is encouraging people to go the extra mile this year, in light of a major happening here this summer.

And When the Games are here and we’ve got thousands of people flooding into the city, I think it’s helpful in changing that whole view of what Prince George stands for. We know and we’ve seen some of those amazing gardens.”

So if you’re thinking of either testing your green thumb this is the year to do plus you’ll get to enjoy the fruits of your labour.
