Fraser Valley answers and succeeds in OT to win chippy Winter Classic clash
FORT ST. JAMES – It was a chippy game between the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds and Cariboo Cougars on Saturday outside at the Ernie Sam Memorial Arena in Fort St. James, one that went the distance and required an extra frame to solve. The Thunderbirds came out on top in a 3-2 overtime win.
With the loss, the Cariboo Cougars have yet to find their way into the win column at Ernie Sam through three contests. They tied the first year back in 2019, then lost in 2020 – the last year it was held with the pandemic preventing the BC Winter Classic from happening in 2021.
In the opening period, the Cariboo Cougars opened the scoring with 13:54 remaining in the period. The goal was scored by Maxwell Sanford, and it marked his 9th tally of the season. The goal was assisted by Josh Sale and Chase Pacheco.
The first 20 minutes was chippy between Cariboo and Fraser Valley, but in the second period, the chippiness came more from the ice than it did the teams. The temperatures made for some challenging ice conditions, keeping the ice crew busy with patchwork.
