PRINCE GEORGE – After more than 12 hours of budget deliberations between Monday and Wednesday, Prince George City Council has settled on a 3% increase to taxes for 2022.

The proposed tax increase for residents started at 6.55%, although after cutting $807k in spending, and using just over $3m of COVID-19 Safe Restart Funding to lower the tax levy.

Council did not get to 3% without floating the idea of several other tax increases in the final moments of Wednesday night’s meeting.

Motions of both 3.8%, and 3.5% respectively were defeated before the room came to a majority.

The final motion of 3%, which will equate to an average of an additional $70 per household in 2022, was carried with a vote of eight to one with only Councillor Kyle Sampson voting against it.

“I just can’t do it,” said Sampson who insisted he was not in agreement about using that amount of COVID-19 funding for a tax levy number he would’ve liked much lower.

Council rejected a budget enhancement from the Prince George RCMP of roughly $200k, along with a budget of $250k to re-open the public washrooms at Canada Games Plaza.

The Human Resources department was handed a reduction of $150k, along with a cut of $82k to the Economic Development division removing a vacant position.

The snow control budget was reduced by $200k along with a slash of $450k to the roads budget for 2022.

Several other reductions were proposed throughout the evening, including to the Emergency Programs department, Strategic Initiatives and Partnerships division, and a larger reduction to HR which was sized down.
