Active Star program returns, offering early introduction to physical literacy

PRINCE GEORGE – Launched in September, the Active Stars program has returned to the Northern Sport Centre after a near one-month hiatus due to provincial restrictions.

“Kids are definitely primed to learn these things at a young age and it’s easiest to learn before they get older, just like it’s easier to learn how to ride a bike when you’re a kid rather than when you’re an adult,” explained Sarah Saunders, the Sport Development Coordinator. “So we want to make sure kids are exposed to a lot of different things. They learn to run, they learn to jump, throw, all of the prerequisites for playing sports at a young age.”

Active Star, put on by Engage Sport North, is a free drop-in program for young children aged 2-5 years old. Children can try different activities and sports that incorporate a variety of body movements in an open and safe environment. It has expanded from being offered twice a week back in September to now running Monday through Thursday.

Active Star enhances the development of coordination, social skills, gross motor skills, emotions, leadership, and imagination. Build confidence, develop posture, balance, and enjoy being active. The programming is led by qualified leaders who have a passion for getting kids and parents excited about physical literacy and Fundamental Movement Skills. Parents are welcome to participate.

“I think it’s great for parents to come out here and do some activities with their kids because when I first started I had no clue the little details it takes to actually teach someone how to throw and catch, I just knew how to do it,” said Sports Coordinator Jenna Korolek. “I think it’s really important for parents to come see how their kid develops and how they learn.”
