PRINCE GEORGE—More than 80 kids will be able to play and explore at the YMCA Park House Care and Early Learning Centre: the city’s newest child care facility. The $3.6 million dollar project was made possible through two different grants.

“One was the province of BC’s new spaces fund, that was just under the $3 million dollar mark.We were also very fortunate to get a child care space creation grant of just under a million dollars from the Union of BC municipalities.” said Chris Bone, Senior Manager of Strategic initiatives and Partnerships at the City of Prince George

A total of 85 spaces will be available at the park house. 12 are for toddlers, 25 spaces are for kids aged 2 and half to 5 years old, and for kids five and older, there’s 48 spaces. This adds to the nearly 400 total spaces funded since 2018.

The facility is divided up by age group, full of natural lighting. On time and on budget was key for the city and their contractor; they say it was a successful project.

“We also got the nice to have things like curtain walls, which is on every door when you’re exiting. We got the cooling in the building, given the snap heatwave we got last time, we decided to have cooling. That also was include it in the budget, so it came in good. We got the two office and we got the outdoor space.” said Tino Mbara, Project Manager at Colliers Project Leaders.

Play rooms full of toys, games, cots to sleep on, shelf spaces, a kitchen, and more can be found in these rooms. For families, the YMCA has a multi-purpose room that will host workshops, meetings, or even serve as a space for kids who need a little extra care.

“When we care for a child, we care for the whole family and a family knows their child the best. But there are lots of other resources that families need.” said Mikalishen.

Those 85 spaces are already filled due to long waiting lists but this facility won’t have 85 kids from the get-go. She says they’re going to begin a soft opening due to a shortage of early child care workers in Canada. Right now, they have three workers that have signed on, but the YMCA is looking to have around a dozen full time.

“Really I know that for us, we’ve had families on the waitlist for two years and still haven’t had their opportunity come up.” said Mikalishen.

To add, she says that if a family is expecting a child, they should get on a waitlist as soon as possible.

This isn’t the only child care facility coming to the city. This year, construction will begin in the Hart to bring 60 spaces that will operate under the Prince George Native Friendship Centre. It’s expected to be open by the summer.

Talks for another space is underway for a facility in college heights, which could be open by next year.
